Income was supposed to protect Black mothers. It never has — and the deliberate unwinding of Black middle-class wealth is now being written into the delivery room.

In the United States, economic mobility has always been treated as the primary shield against bad health outcomes. As income and education rise, the story goes, mortality falls. But when you look at the data on Black women in America, that foundational rule of public health completely disintegrates.
High-income, highly educated Black women — women with advanced degrees — suffer higher rates of severe maternal morbidity and maternal death than low-income white women who never finished high school. Income does not protect Black women from dying in childbirth.
And between 2024 and 2026, the policies that built and stabilized the Black middle class have been dismantled one by one — DEI programs, minority contracting mandates, targeted homeownership lending, the federal jobs that carried the best benefits.
